The controversy: Should platforms be mandatory?

Should the adoption of a platform be mandatory or voluntary for development teams? This talk is a discussion between two speakers, each representing one extreme viewpoint.

Developer platforms make development teams more effective and efficient. Businesses often invest a lot of effort in building good developer platforms. So, wouldn’t it be a waste of time and energy to build a platform teams do not use? Welcome to one of the most controversial topics of platform engineering: Should platform adoption be mandatory or voluntary?

In this talk, we each take one side of this discussion. One of us will advocate for mandatory adoption of developer platforms, while the other will advocate for voluntary platforms. We’ll discuss arguments for both sides and propose a common ground.
