Cracking the value puzzle with a chargeback-driven approach to platform engineering

Platform engineering is the key to an organization's ability to grow and innovate faster. A chargeback model helps justify continued investment in and prioritization of platform capabilities.

The platform engineering team is typically viewed as a cost center where they are expected to constantly justify sustained investment.Implementing a chargeback model can be a strategic move to transform from being a cost center into a more self-sustaining entity within an organization, where the costs incurred by the platform engineering team are charged back to the individual consumer (stream-aligned) teams. It can shift perspectives from viewing it solely as an expense to one that delivers value by generating internal revenue, ultimately driving external customer value. A chargeback model builds the foundation to help leadership prioritize investments in platform engineering capabilities alongside business capabilities.

Key takeaways from this talk:

  • Why you need to build a chargeback model
  • Key considerations for building a successful model
