Breaking news: NYT graph team transforms platform and reinvents role

Explore NYT’s transition to Federated GraphQL: From monolithic architecture to a dynamic, self-serviced platform with improved API governance and observability insights.

Platform engineers prioritize and quite enjoy tackling technical challenges. At the Times, we chose Federated GraphQL to break down our monolithic graph, in order to grant the teams closest to the business increased control and agility in the products they deliver. Yet, truly unlocking our platform’s potential to service our customer teams effectively demands a transition from a service-oriented approach to a platform-centric way of working.

Come learn how we are improving our platform by:

  1. Replacing gatekeeping with a framework for stewardship and governance
  2. Shifting from building APIs ourselves to building a self-service API contribution model
  3. Transitioning from tier-0 troubleshooting to tools for platform insights and observability
